Place Value

A firm understanding of place value sits at the heart of much of the mathematics that is carried out in Primary school.

In order to remember the place value markings, we meet our beloved character: Oscar The Horrible!
One of the key benefits of fully understanding place value is to be able to multiply and divide numbers by 10, 100, 1000 (or indeed, any power of 10).

This video uses the place value slider to quickly perform this calculation.

(Please note that we avoid saying, "put a zero on the end" when multiplying by 10 as this strategy does not show an understanding of place value or apply when working with decimal numbers).
This video from White Rose explains another way in which to picture the multiplication and division of numbers by powers of 10.
