Multiplication & Division

Multiplication

This video demonstrates the written method for Long Multiplication.  The main thing to concentrate on here is to set up and space out the calculation correctly at the start.

(Remember we are only doing a calculation such as 34,234 x 23 in this way because we don't know our 23 times table - so if you were asked to multiply by 11 or 12 even though these have 2 digits, you can carry out the calculation in the short multiplication method and x10 will always be done by moving the digits up by one place).
Division

For problems where we know the times table (1-9, 11 and 12) we can use this written method of calculation (known as the bus stop method) for short division.

(Remember that dividing by 10 can be done by moving the number by one place to the right.)
Finally, this video introduces the "chunking method" for long division.  This is one of the newer methods which parents and carers sometimes find harder to follow.

There are 2 versions of this video - this is is the shorter version, ideal for a quick recap.
The following video is slightly longer and goes into a bit more detail about the method and may be helpful if your child has watched the shorter video but still doesn't fully understand the method.
