Fractions (Part 1)

Developing learning about fractions is one of the main areas of new mathematical learning in Year 6.  I hope these videos will help to explain the concepts and the methods to be used.

Simplifying Fractions

This video looks at how to identify the highest common factor to simplify a fraction.  This can sometimes be called expressing a fraction in its simplest form.
Compare (order), Add and Subtract Fractions

These are the three occasions in which we need to ensure that fractions have the "same name" (the same denominator).   This video shows you how to achieve this.
Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions

A mixed number is one where you have some wholes and a proper fraction (for example, 1⅗).  An improper fraction is one where the numerator is greater than the denominator (for example, 5/3).  This video explores how to deal with these two types of fraction.
